WASHINGTON | Tue Jan 22, 2013 4:10pm EST

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Michael Froman, White House deputy national security adviser for international economic affairs, is unlikely to succeed Ron Kirk as U.S. trade representative as some in Washington had speculated, two sources Reuters on Tuesday.

Froman was considered a top candidate for the job. Kirk announced on Tuesday that he would step down as the top U.S. trade official in late February.

Froman's current portfolio at the White House includes trade as well as international finance, development, energy and climate change policy.

One source said White House officials were still in the process of finding a replacement for Kirk.
